Follow the Sunrise Trail along Nova Scotia's North Shore,
from Amherst to Antigonish, and explore warm waters along
sandy shorelines or the rugged coastal highlands of Cape George.
|
From Halifax, take Hwy 102 to Truro, exit right onto Hwy 104 towards Cape Breton Island. Exit left on #27 just before Antigonish; keep left on road along coast through Arisaig to Cape George Point (just before Ballantynes Cove). Look for lighthouse sign and exit left onto unpaved road to lighthouse. Spectacular coastline view across St. Georges Bay of Cape Breton Island, notably the communities of Judique and Port Hood. Bring binoculars and look for eagles soaring along cliffs.

From Halifax, follow Highway 102 to Truro. Take exit #13 or #14 into Truro and follow signs through Bible Hill to Upper Onslow. Exit onto Highway 311 north towards Nuttby/Tatamagouche.
Follow Highway 311 through Tatamagouche as it joins Highway 6. Follow Highway 6 along North Shore through Pugwash, and exit right onto Highway 366. Follow Highway 366 through Amherst Shore to Tidnish.
Tidnish was the north end of the Old Chignecto Marine Railway, an impressive engineering project designed to pull wooden ships overland from the Northumberland Straight to Chignecto Bay, via a "Marine Railway". There are several interpretive displays in the area, including a picnic park on the site of the cradle wharf. As well, several trail systems have been developed on the old
railbeds.
